Vietnam; drafted U.S. Army and inducted 9-14-1970; Honorably discharged in 1972.  Stationed at Fort Polk, LA, for basic training and advanced individual training.  Fort Polk was the largest infantry training post in the world during the mid 1960’s and early 1970’s.  Job title was 11B Light Weapons Infantry; Ben went in country at Cam Rank Bay, South Vietnam stationed at Camp Evans in the northern part of Military Region I.  Camp Evans was located near the village of Phong Dien and north of Hue, the old French capitol of South Vietnam.  Be was just 30 miles from Laos and North Vietnam.  Ben served with the 101st Airborne Division 3rd Battalion 187th Infantry Division, was in Bravo Company.  Ben’s battalion was known as RAKKASAN which means, “Have valor not fail.”  Areas of operation were along the A Shau Valley, Rock Pile, Red Devil Road, Dong Ha, along the DMZ, Khe Sanh and in the Cam Rank Bay area.  Ben received the following commendations: Air Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Bronze Star Attachment for Operation Lam Son 719; Combat Infantryman Badge (Ben says it’s an honor to wear this one.); Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with Device (1960); Expert Badge and Machine Gun Bar and Pistol Bar; Sharpshooter Badge and Auto Rifle Badge; Marksman Badge and Grenade Bar; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation.

While with Bravo Company, Ben was the M60 machine gunner, carried the radio, and operated it for his platoon and carried the radio for the captain of his company.  He did different jobs as some soldiers went on leave or went home for good.

“Back in the world,” was a phrase used by the soldiers when they talked about home or the good old US of A.

Ben says that affects of Agent Orange could be a possibility in his future.  He says the stuff was not sprayed directly on him, but he worked in areas where it had killed everything.  There might be some carryover from the soil.  With all the negative things said about Vietnam, Ben is still proud of his country and his tour of duty.
